Evening everyone.....
I’m not sure if any of you are aware or not but the American Silver Eagle and the Gold American Eagle are getting a design change.
It’s been a topic for the last few years and the US Mint has released a statement that the new design will be available in the summer of 2021.
So what does this mean for 2021 American Eagles until then ????
The US Mint will continue producing the American Eagle that we already have until they begin production of the new design.
There are several things to consider now with this.....
While no one truly knows exactly what the US Mint will actually do. (That includes the US Mint themselves) But from what I have read from several sources that I trust.
Most think that the production of 2021 American Eagles in the old design will be very limited.
Here is the logic.....
It takes roughly a month for mint to switch out all the machinery and do test runs and calibrations per several sources.
If that’s the case, most believe that they will have to shut down production no later then March. Which means at tops the US Mint will only produce them for three months December, January and February.
Over the last three years the total mintage of American Silver Eagles is roughly 16.8 million. Which sounds like an awful lot and is comparatively speaking. But the average mintage from the previous five years is over 30.5 million per year.
With the COVID regulations the US Mint is running at roughly 40% of its normal workers.
The guess is at max the US Mint will produce around four million American Silver Eagles. Considering it’s the most collected coin in the world that’s not much. Also with the price of silver and the premiums attached physical silver sales are actually down.
Will the US Mint go full throttle and bang them out ????
Or could this be a diamond in the rough.......
Here is what the new designs will look like in the summer.
