Meurig raced forward and let out a chortle of delight when the human he had targeted screeched and jumped out of his path.

His kind had always stayed in the shadows, clung to the walls. The elders preached their laws of secrecy to the nest so relentlessly that none of the young even considered disobeying. Meurig had only done so by accident, but that first rush of power was enough to draw him back again and again.

He switched directions, towards one that one that had just rushed into the room. The fool had probably been drawn by its fellow human’s cry. As soon as its eyes locked onto Meurig’s swiftly moving form another gratifying shriek rang out.

Pitiful, thought Meurig as he followed the retreating human.

They both scurried out into the hallway, an area rich with victims, just as it had been yesterday when he’d scoped it out. More screams. Someone even jumped up on a table!

He altered his focus to someone new and charged forward once again. The human skipped backwards but Meurig moved faster.
So far he hadn’t even touched any of them, perhaps this one would be his first.

But then the unthinkable happened. The human stopped and then took a step forward, moving towards Meurig.

It was too late to turn back when the human raised its foot and Meurig realized just how large it really was. He’d never been up close to one.

The foot came down. He could feel, and even worse hear, his exoskeleton cracking. The pain was incredible until familiar, comfortable darkness overtook his senses.

This was inspired by Wednesday's #freewrite prompt: pitiful.
