An ode to my breakfast plate
on the table it sat as I ate
corned beef and eggs
coffee and creamer
consumed while my breathing meds wait.
The doctor has said take it slow
so I cancelled my gym plans to go
put the eggs in a pan
cleared a space, here I am
comfy in my purple bathrobe.
My son is upstairs with a fever
the girls off to school with their father
who grinned when I said
I'd be staying in bed
he's a "you push too hard" believer.
He's not wrong, that partner of mine-
I go go go go all the time
it's important to rest
and after this week of test
this respite is more than required.
Pain medication put away
for a wrist with a scream-at-me sprain
I hope I don't need it
I'm grateful, not greedy
especially on a lay around day of rain.
But back to that breakfast plate
and the corned beef and eggs that I ate
the coffee and creamer
drunk down by this dreamer
with the pills that help me respirate.
Dear dirty plate on the table
thank you for making me able
to swallow the pill
that's banishing my ills
and bringing my health back to stable.
I look forward to the day I am well
at the gym swinging heavy kettlebells
surrounded by friends
all pushing to the end
until then it's all Netflix and chill.
