Depending on how short the client wants to go helps me to determine which guard size to use. In Ethan's case he is trying to keep it a little on the longer side, I always use Clippers with the adjustable blade lever to help you blend in that extra 1/2 of an inch.
Ethan has a lot of cowlicks near the crown of his head. I believe in changing guards many times to make it flow cleanly and precisely . I started with a 3, 3 1/2 all the way up to a 5. Then scissor cut and texture the top.
Rub American Crew fiber in your hands about the size of a nickle. rubbing it will warm it up and help it liquefy just a little bit more to help make it more workable especially to separate the hair for texture or to help lay down cow licks.
