Paracress, scientifically known as Acmella oleracea, is a flowering herb in the Asteraceae family, native to South America. Commonly called the "toothache plant" or "electric daisy," it’s known for its unique ability to create a tingling, numbing sensation in the mouth when chewed. This effect is due to the presence of a compound called spilanthol, which has anesthetic and antimicrobial properties.
Paracress is sometimes used as a garnish or ingredient in dishes and cocktails. Its leaves and flowers have a slight peppery taste, and the tingling sensation it creates can be an intriguing addition to food. Known for its traditional use in relieving toothache and gum discomfort, paracress is thought to have potential anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial effects. Spilanthol is sometimes used in skincare products as it may help with reducing wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles slightly, giving a smoother appearance. It’s easy to grow in warm, sunny conditions and prefers well-drained soil. While it can be cultivated as an annual in temperate regions, it's perennial in tropical climates. Its daisy-like flowers are yellow with a red center, giving it an ornamental appeal in gardens.
