If you like walking far (and I always wanted to walk further in New Zealand, or to stay in different places for another hour or day or a week to see all the details ... :)), then you can do it in Tongariro National Park, from the route in previous post. Very close to the Taranaki Falls you need to turn onto a path that does not return to the village, but goes further.
If you have a few days, you can go around Mount Ngauruhoe, but if you have several hours (5-7), go to the Tama Lakes Track. It will lead you to such a lovely turquoise Lower Tama Lake you can see here. It is also worth a visit its neighbor, Upper Tama Lake.
