From my childhood we make a sweet version - stale bread, a little fat, an egg, some dried fruit and sugar, mixed spice. It was very inexpensive and there was no waste bread. Sometimes there wasn't any stale bread, it has all been eaten, that was a sad day for us children. The savoury pudding is new to me, I tried it once before but it wasn't successful (more like porridge), this was very tasty, I think the flavourings are important.
