It is almost 70 years that the United Nations General Assembly adopts Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It contains 30 Articles in all, and the article 4 of this declaration addressed the term slavery and it states that "No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”
Sadly, slavery is still in existence but in different dimension. Slavery of any kind is bad, but the worst of them all is the mental slavery. This modern mental slavery has to deal with the thinking faculty of the people and they see themselves as nothing but useless without their oppresor. It gives the illusion of freedom and breeds love and trust for the oppressor.
According to Madeleine L'Engle, who object that taking away of a man's freedom of choice, even his freedom to make the wrong choice, is to manipulate him as though he were a puppet and not a person. This explain why the victims always opt for violence because the trauma after the illusion of freedom leaves them with strong hatred for anything related to the oppressor. They forget at this point that an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.
From the uprisings in the Sudan, the Libya, the Syria; and the terrorist attack in Nigeria, the Europe and the America. We live in a world full of hatred and violence. The oppressed try to follow the teaching which says when someone puts their hands on you, make sure they never put their hands on anybody else again - this is the basis of terrorism.
The mental slavery is not good for the oppressed and the oppressor. Its by-product is violence which threatens our humanity. Let's shun violence and make our make our world a better place to be.
