Variations of this image have been an ongoing theme for me for several years. I use traditional calligraphy pens to draw these.
Sometimes I add water to blur the fine lines and create a washed out look.
Complexity can be achieved by adding some detail, but the focus is the lines.
Flourishes from traditional calligraphy lettering can go a long way too.
These were all done with the Pilot Parallel Pen.
