National Good Samaritan Day, March 13, honors the actions of people who respond with compassion and kindness when they see needs. And in so doing, they are making the world a better place.
The expression, “Good Samaritan,” comes from a parable that Jesus told in response to a question a lawyer had asked him: “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25-37)
Here is a brief retelling of that inspiring and instructional story about being a good neighbor and making the world a better place.
NOTE: Watch for the surprising revelation of who actually ends up being the neighbor.
Being a Good Samaritan
The lawyer wanted to know who his neighbor was that the law commanded him to love. Jesus answered by defining what it means to be a good neighbor, what it means to love.
For reflection and action:
How can you be a neighbor to someone you encounter today that is beaten and distressed?
What kindness and mercy can you extend – even, well especially -- if the person is not in your community or “tribe”?
Where could you give time, treasure and talent that you have to those in need?
