A very important part of being a responsible and impactful human is the ability to leave every place better than you found it. It may be at home, in your office, in business, within your community, always try to make a positive difference. If people come across you, are they happy that they met you, or do they regret that they met you? When you leave a place, what do people remember you for? A lot of people only focus on what they will get from a place, but not too many people think about what they will contribute. The people who are truly successful would want to leave behind value, improvement, and positive changes everywhere that they go.

You do not need to be influential, wealthy, famous, or in a place of authority before you leave a place better than you found it. What you need is the willingness to improve situations, the willingness to help people, and to contribute positively. There are times that even something as little as a calm word, a thoughtful idea, or even a small act of service that you give to someone that will be what will create a lasting impact on their life. What people will remember you for is far more important than who you are. Here, we shall see some vital and practical ways by which you can develop valuable habits that will make you to leave a place better than you met it.
The first one is to learn to add values through your actions. Everyday will definitely present you with opportunities to make positive contributions. But instead of doing just the barely minimum required of you, you can look for ways to improve the environment around you. For example, in your place of work, you may be given a task to perform. Instead of doing it just for "doing sake," you can decide to add a touch of excellence and expertise to it, while delivering it on time. You see, you are not just doing the minimum, but you are adding extra value through your actions. When you constantly add value, you will be respected, because your presence will make people feel better.
In addition to this, you have to learn to treat people with kindness and respect. A very significant way to leave a place better than you met it is through the way you treat people. More often than not, kindness does not cost much, yet it has the power to encourage, to heal, and to inspire people. Treating people with kindness and respect is not a function of who they are, but a function of who you are. The person may occupy a lower level than you, or might even be your subordinate, or your domestic staff, but it is human to treat them with respect and kindness. Trust me, people may forget what you have, and they may not even remember what you say, but the truth is that they will remember how you treated them and how you made them feel.

Another point is to always take responsibilities and do not complain. It is easier to criticise someone or even a problem itself, but you have to understand that it is a sign of maturity to become part of the solution. If something goes wrong for example, instead of complaining about it, ask yourself what you can do to improve the situation. If you discover a problem that you can solve, then help to solve it. Taking responsibilities is part of the ways to demonstrate leadership abilities, and will also show that you care for the well-being of others.
You should also learn to share knowledge and encourage growth. I have come to understand that knowledge will become more valuable when it is shared. If you know something that can help improve the life of others and you do not share it, what will it make you? There are some people that would have a knowledge of something and still be hoarding it like it is some classified information. It you possess a knowledge, a useful skill, lesson, or experience, you should be willing to use it to help others to grow. By helping others to succeed, you will leave behind a good legacy, which will continue even after you have left a place.
