And so we discovered that poachers, the much-hated poachers, are nothing more than the smallest wheels of a huge cog. Very poor people, who for a few dollars start the chain of this business.
A chain that starts in the most remote corners of the world and ends in our markets, on restaurant tables.
In between, a dense chain of intermediaries.
From merchants of ships and animals to ruthless entrepreneurs who sell the most unthinkable things, not only entire loads of animals but entire loads of "pieces" of animals.
From rhinoceros horns to ivory, from fish placentas to lion heads.
Unscrupulous.
Surprising that this is a business for the rich.
Surprising that one of their obsessions, all over the world, is to eat, to own wild animals.
Pumas, whales, lemurs, pangolins.
And it is this curious animal that is one of their favorite victims.
Either as precious meat to eat, or as a cure, or as a superstition.
There are millions of pangolins killed year after year.
They're the ones who fill the Wet Markets all over the world.
It is not by chance that they were most likely the carriers of covid 19.
Not by chance, when the first cases were found in Wuhan, it was the Wet Markets that were closed immediately.
Not by chance, the first infected were all customers of a specific Wet Market.
Not surprisingly, it was the pangolins that were the final vector that would lead the virus to man.
A virus that the bat had transmitted to the pangolin, which the pangolin would have transmitted to us.
It's not a lab-generated virus, as some plotter says.
It's not China's fault.
It is not the fault of poor hygiene in certain countries.
It's not the lack of information.
It's Man's fault.
If we hadn't disturbed Nature, if we hadn't upset it, we wouldn't be locked up today after 2 months of quarantine.
We thought too long that we were invincible.
We thought we could replace God.
Are we going to miss our chance to change course?
Puma, balene, lemuri, pangolini.
