Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Direi di partire proprio da qui, dall'interpretazione credibile, convincente e disturbante di Hauser, chiamato ad interpretare Larry Hall, uomo che, negli anni '90 fu accusato del rapimento, dell'uccisione e della sepoltura di decine di adolescenti, ragazze innocenti finite nella tela di un killer seriale che le autorità avevano individuato nella persona di Larry Hall.
Nella serie, Larry viene rappresentato come un ragazzone di campagna, esperto ed appassionato di rivisitazioni storiche, turbato e complessato e spesso nel mirino delle autorità.
Il non ritrovamento dei corpi (salvo quello della prima vittima, Jessica Roach) impedisce alle autorità di tenere "al fresco" l'assassino per il resto della sua vita, sperando che egli non vinca l'appello previsto di li a qualche mese.
Le confessioni forzate, la vena chiacchierona di Larry, i suoi palesi disturbi comportamentali, l'essere stato a volte smentito rispetto alle sue stesse versioni, mettono a rischio la dimostrazione della sua colpevolezza.
Hauser ha fatto un lavoro di mimica facciale straordinario, restituendoci un personaggio palesemente agghiacciante ma spesso in bilico fra la verità e la follia.

Tornando ad Hauser sono con lui i momenti più inequivocabilmente importanti, feroci e ripugnanti.
Sul volto dell'attore trasuda tutta la deviazione di un uomo che ha compiuto delitti efferati, contro bambine innocenti, ree di essere capitate lungo il percorso della follia dell'uomo, convinto di dover dare serenità e beatitudine a quelle ragazze, mosso da una mano divina che lo avrebbe reso parte di qualcosa.
Quel non essere mai stato parte di qualcosa, di un gruppo, di una comunità, di una famiglia, ha reso Larry totalmente disumano e costantemente alla ricerca di un modo per "essere visto".
Quelle uccisioni saranno il suo biglietto da visita verso la celebrità ma, soprattutto, verso l'approvazione di chi, nella vita di tutti i giorni, lo respinge come si respingerebbe un fiume di letame o, semplicemente, lo ignora come si ignorerebbe un mendicante ai margini di una strada.
Larry, dopo aver subito traumi irreparabili nel corso della sua infanzia, riesce a creare la propria liturgia, la propria setta di cui solo lui farà parte e di cui solo lui venererà la divinità.

La serie non ci porta da nessuna parte se non alla conclusione di questa specifica vicenda giudiziaria e criminale, quello che, però, riesce a fare è di portarci nei meandri della psiche umana, tanto quanto riusciva a farlo, ancora meglio, True Detective con la sua stagione numero 1.
Non è un caso se, il contraltare di Larry sia proprio Jimmy, ragazzo di strada, fascinosissimo e ricco che ha avuto la fortuna di scatenare le sue pulsioni sessuali e, a suo modo, deviate nei confronti di giovani e belle donne che lo avrebbero seguito su qualsiasi letto ed in qualsiasi stanza, spinte dal desiderio di toccare con mano il suo corpo, la sua ricchezza, la sua potenza.

C'è anche Ray Liotta, all'ultima interpretazione prima di lasciarci per sempre qualche mese fa.

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

On the hunt for serial killers as well as serial fillers?

Do you regret the day True Detective ended?

Has criminal psychology always fascinated you?

A few weeks ago, through this first impressions post, I warned you.
Apple TV Plus had provided to feed our criminal appetite, releasing the pilot of Black Bird, a TV series based on a true story and that seemed to have all the cards on the table to convince and win across the board.
I had, even, ventured a juxtaposition with True Detective (how blasphemous of me!), and today at the end of watching the show, and having metabolized all the elements that characterized it, I am to tell you that....(find out after the image of a very sick Paul Walter Hauser as Larry Hall).

I would say let's start right there, with the credible, convincing and disturbing performance of Hauser, who was called upon to play Larry Hall, a man who, in the 1990s was accused of the kidnapping, killing and burial of dozens of teenage girls, innocent girls who ended up in the web of a serial killer whom the authorities had identified in the person of Larry Hall.
In the series, Larry is portrayed as a country boy, knowledgeable and passionate about historical reinterpretation, troubled and complexed and often in the crosshairs of the authorities.
The non-discovery of the bodies (except that of the first victim, Jessica Roach) prevents the authorities from keeping the killer "in the can" for the rest of his life, hoping that he will not win the appeal scheduled for a few months from now.
Forced confessions, Larry's chatty streak, his blatant behavioral disturbances, and his having been disproven at times from his own versions all put the proof of his guilt at risk.
Hauser did an extraordinary job of facial expressions, giving us back a character who is patently chilling but often hovering between truth and madness.
Taron Edgerton, also called to no small acting test, had, on the other hand, to impersonate Jimmy Keene, an untamable playboy who ended up in jail for 10 years because of illicit dealings of various kinds. The FBI will ask Jimmy to unmask Larry and "pull from his mouth" the geographical locations where Larry buried the girls.
Taron will, therefore, have to force Larry to trust him by trying to get him to "spill the beans."
In doing so he will descend into the depths of such a twisted mind, and we with him.

Returning to Hauser are with him the most unequivocally important, fierce and repulsive moments.
On the actor's face oozes all the deviance of a man who has carried out heinous crimes, against innocent little girls, guilty of having happened upon the path of the man's madness, convinced that he must give serenity and bliss to those girls, moved by a divine hand that would make him part of something.
That he was never part of something, a group, a community, a family, made Larry totally inhuman and constantly looking for a way to "be seen."
Those killings will be his ticket to stardom but, more importantly, to the approval of those in his everyday life who reject him as one would reject a river of manure or, simply, ignore him as one would ignore a beggar on the side of a road.
Larry, after suffering irreparable traumas during his childhood, manages to create his own liturgy, his own sect of which only he will be a part and whose deity he alone will worship.
For Jimmy it will be a descent into the underworld.
Every time he discovers one more detail, he will end up causing even deeper nausea to himself, will end up even more disgusted by the tales of his "friend."

The series takes us nowhere except to the conclusion of this specific judicial and criminal case, what it does, however, manage to do is to take us into the meanders of the human psyche, much as True Detective managed to do, even better, with its season number 1. The comparison, always risky, fully holds as it takes us inside the head of a man who represents that segment of humanity that is disturbed and deviant but is further pushed to the dark side by the invisibility to which society subjects him.

It is no coincidence that, Larry's counterbalance is Jimmy, a streetwise, charming, rich boy who was lucky enough to unleash his sexual and, in his own way, deviant urges on young and beautiful women who would follow him to any bed and any room, driven by the desire to touch his body, his wealth, his power.
Larry, ugly, fat, poor, awkward, and creepy unleashed those same urges on teenagers who were easy to kidnap, easy to domesticate, and on whom, unfortunately, he unleashed his sexual and murderous fury.
If family, friends, and community had intercepted those urges and discomfort before it became crime, perhaps Larry Hall would never have existed.
Psychology is (also) about environment and opportunity.
Black Bird reminds us of that, and it does so through an intense miniseries that is beautifully done, even better acted, and will have an important place in this abundant and varied 2022 serial.
