Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.
Nella quarta i 2 si affrontano sul tema dell'omosessualità di Michael. Kathleen è distrutta ma comprenderà. Michael accetterà se stesso e la situazione. I 2 si saluteranno. Probabilmente continueranno ad amarsi. Nulla di brutto accadrà.
Il concetto di verità, come capirete, è estremamente sensibile alla prospettiva da cui guardiamo un evento.
La giuria e l'accusa hanno spinto se stessi a credere che l'unica verità fosse che Michael fosse un brutale psicopatico reo di aver commesso ben 2 omicidi seriali.
Una parte della famiglia di Michael ha creduto in lui fino in fondo.
Un'altra parte l'ha abbandonato quasi subito.
La bella Sophie ha messo in discussione la sua intera vita per aiutare Michael ma alla fine non ha saputo più riconoscere la bugia dalla realtà.
Persino i 2 documentaristi si son polarizzati fra chi credeva a Michael e chi lo credeva un assassino.
Colin Firth è stato bravissimo a caricare sulle sue spalle il peso di un personaggio cosi ambiguo.
Michael Peterson è stato dipinto come un abile affabulatore ed un padre egoista e fintamente generoso verso i suoi tanti figli, nati da altri matrimoni.
Lo abbiamo visto spingere Todd verso l'esaurimento, isolare Clayton come fosse un malato di mente, costringere Martha a chiudersi in se stessa, Margaret a credere a tutto come fosse una bambina. Spesso, nel momento in cui contava, abbiamo assistito alle manipolazioni di Michael atte ad avere accanto i suoi figli, ad averli alle sue dipendenze, senza mai chiederlo esplicitamente ma lasciando sempre che fossero loro a decidere di seguirlo quasi come degli adepti di una setta farebbero con il loro guru.
Sophie ha assaggiato quella stessa torta.
Arrivare alla fine della stagione senza avere capito se il protagonista fosse davvero colpevole è stato frustrante ma anche fondamentale per dare un senso a tutto lo show ed al messaggio che sottintendeva l'intero racconto.
Quel primo piano enigmatico sul volto di Colin Firth resta un'immagine copertina di una miniserie, e di un personaggio, difficili da dimenticare.

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see at www.serialfiller.org.
In the series we are shown as many as four potential truths.
In the first one, Kathleen, in a series of unfortunate events, falls 2 times down the stairs, smashing her skull against the wall and steps and choking to death in her own blood while Michael was poolside, unable to hear her.
In the second, the woman discovers photos of naked men on her husband's PC. She confronts him and he loses his temper. He kills her by pretending it was an accident.
In the third, the owl theory is sealed by the sequence in which everything is born outside, by an owl clinging to Kathleen, wounding and bruising her. The staircase will be an everest for her who, in trying to climb the steps will slip and hit her head, tragically dying in her own blood.
In the fourth the 2 confront each other on the subject of Michael's homosexuality. Kathleen is devastated but will understand. Michael will accept himself and the situation. The 2 will say goodbye to each other. They will probably continue to love each other. Nothing bad will happen.
The concept of truth, as you will understand, is extremely sensitive to the perspective from which we look at an event.
The jury and the prosecution pushed themselves to believe that the only truth was that Michael was a brutal psychopath guilty of committing as many as 2 serial murders.
Part of Michael's family believed in him to the end.
Another part abandoned him almost immediately.
The beautiful Sophie questioned her whole life to help Michael but in the end she could no longer recognize lie from reality.
Even the 2 documentarians became polarized between those who believed Michael and those who believed him to be a murderer.
Colin Firth did a great job of carrying the weight of such an ambiguous character on his shoulders.
Michael Peterson was portrayed as a skilled storyteller and an egotistical and faux-generous father to his many children from other marriages.
We saw him push Todd toward exhaustion, isolate Clayton as if he were mentally ill, force Martha to shut herself away, Margaret to believe everything as if she were a child. Often, when it mattered, we witnessed Michael's manipulations designed to have his children beside him, to have them at his beck and call, never explicitly asking for it but always letting them decide to follow him almost as cult followers would do with their guru.
Sophie tasted that same cake.
Many have tasted it. Many were able to spit it out on the floor. Others had to vomit it several times before keeping it out of their diet.
Michael Peterson was, unequivocally, a bad person, a bad human being.
Was he also a murderer?
Arriving at the end of the season without having figured out whether the protagonist was really guilty was frustrating but also crucial to making sense of the whole show and the underlying message of the entire narrative.
That enigmatic close-up on Colin Firth's face remains a cover image of a miniseries, and a character, that is hard to forget.
It continued, often, to remind me of The Undoing.
It continued, often, to make me long for an open ending.
That open ending has arrived, at the tail end of a tough and never quite smooth-running series, but one that Antonio Campos has skilfully designed, directed, and produced.
Michael Peterson will forever be the sole keeper of the truth. Of this truth. The only one who, looking through the camera, his hair now white and his face corrupted by wrinkles, will be able to tell a now lonely, old and forlorn self the whole truth, nothing but the truth.
