Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

L'umanità come peso, come fardello per se stessa ma anche come unica via d'uscita.
E' un messaggio che ritorna spesso.
Ritorna quando viene introdotta Rose Walker ed il concetto di "Vortex", ritorna nel rapporto fra Lucienne e Dream, e addirittura quando si affronta il concetto di Morte, laddove nella morte gli esseri umani riescono a rifugiarsi solo quando ad accompagnarli c'è un volto amico, in questo caso rappresentato proprio da una delle sorelle di Dream.
L'umanità al centro ma mai lavata dei propri peccati. Non c'è indulgenza, non c'è candore, non c'è ingenuità.
Gli uomini sono quelli che sono e saranno sempre la rovina di se stessi.
Sono gli esseri crudeli che hanno tenuto in gabbia Dream per un secolo.
Sono gli esseri malvagi che si radunano ogni anno in una convention di criminali e peccatori che assurge il Corinzio a proprio idolo.
Sono gli esseri disfunzionali che nascondono dietro le bugie e i non detti una valanga di rimpianti.
Ma gli uomini sono anche quelli capaci di donare vita eterna al proprio figlio, dopo 116 anni di giovinezza.

Ne ha avuti, e non pochi e mi fa specie che non vengano sottolineati abbastanza, presi come siamo dal celebrarla e dal tirare un sospiro di sollievo nel sapere che Netflix sia riuscita a non rovinarla.
In primis, The Sandman è una serie didascalica come poche.
Tutto quello che accadeva ci veniva detto e raccontato, sempre, come se fossimo bambini delle elementari a cui spiegare una lezione elementare.
Lo "Show, Don't Tell", non appartiene a questo show.
Una serie come Better Call Saul avrebbe raccontato, e meglio, le stesse cose senza aver mai fatto spiegare a nessuno dei suoi personaggi cosa stesse accadendo o cosa stesse per accadere. Personalmente lo trovo, sempre, un notevole minus. Uno show che ha bisogno di ricorrere costantemente allo spiegone, per bocca dei suoi personaggi, è uno show che non potrà mai ambire ad essere un capolavoro.
Altro difetto che ho avvertito parecchio è legato alla rapidità con cui sono state fatte evaporare storyline importanti.
Penso alla sconfitta di Johnny e del Corinzio che hanno sicuramente vissuto una risoluzione affrettata e poco sviscerata.
Infine, ma giusto per evidenziare i 3 principali difetti che mi vengono in mente mentre scrivo (ma ce ne sono anche molti altri), vorrei sottolineare una cosa che, pur non essendo un lettore del fumetto, ho avvertito con il mio "sesto senso" per poi appurare, documentandomi in rete, fosse vera. Sto parlando del gender swap o, in generale, del cambiamento del sesso, del colore della pelle, delle caratteristiche principali di alcuni personaggi. Alcune cose mi apparivano un po' forzate ed in effetti, rispetto ai fumetti, qualcosa era "fisicamente" cambiato.

Un cambiamento cosi costante credo non abbia giovato ma si tratta di un tema forse molto più ampio di quanto non sembri.
In definitiva, però, The Sandman è promosso a voti alti ma non pieni.
La visione è stata assolutamente piacevole, soprattutto nella prima, ottima, parte della stagione e ha generato un discreto hype per la seconda quando, probabilmente, i demoni dell'ade scateneranno la propria furia contro Dream ed il suo reame.

As usual today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

This last question is answered by a central episode dedicated to the figure of Johnny who, having come into possession of the ruby (one of the 3 tools lost by Sandman in 1919), inflicts a huge punishment on humanity by depriving them of the ability to dream and lie. The lie, as Sandman will say, is only one side of a coin that sees on the other side the will to fight for one's dreams and, thus, to instill in oneself and others a lively hope in the near and future.
Not surprisingly, the world drawn by Johnny is a lost, chaotic world in the grip of violence and self-destruction.

Humanity as a burden, as a burden to itself but also as the only way out.
It is a message that returns often.
It returns when Rose Walker and the concept of "Vortex" is introduced, it returns in the relationship between Lucienne and Dream, and even when the concept of Death is addressed, where in death human beings are able to take refuge only when there is a friendly face to accompany them, in this case represented by one of Dream's own sisters.
Humanity at the center but never washed of its sins. There is no indulgence, no candor, no naiveté.
Men are what they are and will always be the bane of themselves.
They are the cruel beings who have kept Dream caged for a century.
They are the evil beings who gather every year in a convention of criminals and sinners who make Corinthians their idol.
They are the dysfunctional beings who hide behind lies and unspoken words an avalanche of regrets.
But men are also those capable of giving eternal life to their child after 116 years of youth.
Or those capable of sacrificing themselves for their granddaughter.
Or even those able to pick themselves up after plunging into chaos.
Netflix's show has been able to dictate the times and not get caught unprepared, drawing noteworthy worlds and stories, from the dream world, to the underworld, via creatures, such as the Gargoyle Gregory and the many nightmares, dreamlike and spectacular.
Will The Sandman, however, have been flawed?
Or did it?

It has had some, and quite a few, and it is odd to me that they are not emphasized enough, caught up as we are in celebrating it and breathing a sigh of relief in knowing that Netflix has managed not to spoil it.
First, The Sandman is a didactic series like few others.
Everything that happened was told and retold to us, always, as if we were elementary school children being taught an elementary lesson.
The "Show, Don't Tell," does not belong on this show.
A series like Better Call Saul would have told, and better, the same things without ever having any of its characters explain what was happening or what was going to happen. I personally find that, always, a significant minus. A show that needs to constantly resort to explanation, by the mouths of its characters, is a show that can never aspire to be a masterpiece.
Another flaw that I felt quite a bit is related to the speed with which important storylines were evaporated.
I am thinking of the defeat of Johnny and Corinthian, which certainly experienced a hasty and unexamined resolution.
Finally, but just to highlight the top 3 flaws that come to mind as I write (but there are many others as well), I would like to point out one thing that, although I am not a reader of the comic, I felt with my "sixth sense" and then ascertained by documenting it on the web was true. I am talking about the gender swap or, in general, the change of sex, skin color, and the main characteristics of some characters. Some things seemed a bit forced to me and in fact, compared to the comics, something had "physically" changed.
In general this might not be a problem but when it comes to a transposition of something so important and so well known, one cannot, in my opinion, change too much, also because, unlike a novel, in a comic book the reader, in addition to reading, "watches" and gets attached to the idea of that character being a woman, a man, blond, brown, tall, thin, Caucasian, African-American and so on.
Such constant change I think has not helped, but this is perhaps a much broader theme than it seems.

Ultimately, however, The Sandman is promoted with high but not full marks.
It was thoroughly enjoyable viewing, especially in the first, excellent, part of the season and generated a fair amount of hype for the second when, presumably, the demons of Hades will unleash their fury against Dream and his realm.
My mouth is watering.
Despite the flaws.
