22-10-2026 - Production Technologies, Time, and Methods - Factors That Reduce Productivity [EN]-[IT]

In this post, I would like to provide a brief explanation of the subject mentioned above.

Introduction to Production
First, let’s clarify the term "production." Production refers to the set of activities through which a company transforms resources into goods or services, thereby creating value.
In the context of production technologies, time, and methods, these resources are also called "inputs," while the resulting goods or services are known as "outputs."
In other words, production involves using materials, machinery, labor, and energy to create a product or service that fulfills a specific need.

The Core Concept Behind Reduced Productivity
The fundamental principle is that productivity declines when more resources than necessary—such as time, labor, materials, or machinery—are used to produce a given quantity of goods.
This results in waste and the erosion of profit margins.

What Reduces Productivity?
A company’s productivity can decrease due to various factors. Below, I have listed what I consider to be the four most significant ones:

  1. Flaws in product design
  2. Inefficient processes and production methods
  3. Deficiencies in company management
  4. Factors related to the workforce

Below is an image that summarizes these concepts.

How these factors affect production times
Before addressing the topic, let us clarify that production time is divided into two parts: base work time and additional time.
The total time required to manufacture a product can be broken down as follows (from top to bottom):
A — Base work time
B — Additional time due to design flaws
C — Additional time due to inefficient methods
D — Unproductive time attributable to management
E — Unproductive time attributable to the worker

Total time = A + B + C + D + E

Conclusions
Production is the set of activities through which a company transforms resources (inputs) into goods or services (outputs), thereby creating value.
For example, in a machine shop, production consists of transforming a steel bar into a mechanical shaft through turning, milling, and grinding operations.

Historical background and questions
In the past, Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856–1915) was one of the pioneers in the scientific study of productivity. He analyzed workers' tasks to identify the most efficient working method.
Did you know that the approach based on the systematic elimination of waste was introduced by Toyota, through Taiichi Ohno?

[EN]-[IT]

Tempo totale = A + B + C + D + E

Conclusioni
