Collection Highlights - 1877-S Quarter

This is the second coin that I recently bought from my friend who was selling off some of his collection and preparing for his long-term goal of opening up a local coin shop. This beautiful 90% silver coin is from 1877 and was minted in San Francisco. It was one of 8,000,996,000 coins that was minted. I think it's done a fairly good job surviving so far considering that it is over 150 years old. It's amazing so many of these have lasted so long and I'm glad that they're in the hands of collectors.

VF30
From my guess at taking a look at the photo grades I'm thinking this quarter could bring a grade of a round of very fine 30. I know it's very subjective and I'm certainly not any sort of expert but when I pull up the vf-30 coins on PCGS photo grid they certainly appear to me to be very similar to my own coins. I may be overestimating my own and they could go anywhere from a lower very fine to fine depending on the where that I might be overlooking. I think I have a tendency to overgrade coins from time to time but I have also undergraded coins. It's all very subjective and unless you get one professionally graded it's up to the purchaser to determine where they think the grade is

Obverse

The obverse is a great image of a seated female holding the Liberty Shield with her right hand. Once again our money calls back to the principles of Liberty that our nation was founded on. I think this is a fairly solid design. When you add in the 13 stars in The rated edge I think it pulls off a very nice balanced coin that celebrates our principles.

Reverse

While I really love the seated coins, I'm a huge fan of the reverse of this coin and sometimes I think it might actually be my favorite side. The eagle is a great image with immense detail on the feathers in The Shield. The banner over its head says in God we trust surrounded by the words United States of America around the upper room and quarter dollar on the bottom. Mint mark is below the eagles feet and once again the edge is readed which I think is a really nice touch in some of this older money. It certainly wears very well and looks great. I think the reverse of this coin is probably the better graded side of the two but it's just that detail in the eagle that really pops for me.

I'm having not bought much seated stuff for so I was very excited to get these last two pieces I showed you. I hope to buy more of these as I find pieces that I like the way they look and that I find at a decent price. I know many people love to buy these slab and grated coins, and I certainly would if I was buying anything that was approaching an uncirculated or near mid State. For me right now at this point of my collecting I'm happy to get these more common varieties into my collection to look at and I can always go back and buy the uncirculated stuff if my situation and goals change. I have two more coins from this most recent purchase that I'm looking forward to sharing. I have a 1925 and a 1880 Morgan dollar.
