Amando condicionalmente
¡Te sentirías tentado a mentir e incluso traicionar!.
If you love a flower, don't pick it, because if you do it will stop being what you love. Love is about appreciation, not possession. - Osho
When I first fell in love, but broke up with that person, it was one of the most chaotic moments of my life. Not only because of all the pain and confusion but because I thought that by following a set of rules it would be impossible to lose a relationship.
I was convinced that relationships needed strength and fortitude more than anything. That those that broke were because of a lack of will, determination, fortitude. Despite having endured many things, having made an effort and having suppressed many feelings, it ended anyway. It was an existential moment. While I was trying to resolve the tangle that I had in my head, I came across Osho's phrase that I placed at the beginning of this post.
The truth hit me like a bolt of lightning: My love had never been unconditional. I was playing a kind of power game, where the members had to fulfill a duty. As a man, I had to show strength. Come to think of it, I was good at it, had been all my life. In pretending, in suppressing, in dissimulating. That was the concept of strength of my time. When I realized that none of that had helped, another huge, dark mental castle was torn down from my belief system.
I would like to say that I immediately felt good. But it's not like that. When you let something go, a void is left behind that is often filled with confusion and pain. But in exchange, that space is filled again and hopefully it will be with wisdom. There are many who choose to fill it with resentment and it has happened to me on some occasions, but sometimes we are privileged to be able to choose the right path to change. So I'm here to teach you what I learned from my experience, because it might as well save you a few headaches.
Loving conditionally
As long as you love me, I will be by your side. That's the kind of love we're used to. In exchange for loyalty, sharing the same beliefs, enacting the same code or belonging to the same country.
At other times, it's a transaction: I give to you hoping you'll give me something in return when I need it. What we are really talking about is cultural baggage that is difficult to dispel, especially if it has been strong at the family level. Why do we do that? In my personal experience, it is because we have a deep, unspeakable need. We are hungry for love, so we buy it with things or favors, hoping that when we ask for it it will be impossible to deny.
Our wounds are the main enemies of our generosity. We think that if we behave in a certain way, the other person will have no right to be upset with us because we have a deep fear of confrontation, or, when we are afraid of rejection, we do many favors so that they do not abandon us. Without realizing it, we are falling into emotional blackmail that is deeply unpleasant for others and thus we end up causing precisely what we fear most.
Loving unconditionally
One of the things you should start with is healing your personal wounds. If you are in need of affection on a traumatic level, I would compare it to a fatal wound. What would you do in exchange for not being mortally wounded? You would be tempted to lie and even betray! To cover those wounds you need deep understanding and most of all someone to talk to. Starting by talking to a professional, like a psychologist, if those wounds have prevented you from having a deep friendship, is a good option for me. Once you have achieved this, you will have taken a huge weight off your shoulders. That is why I think that certain basic human needs should be guaranteed to ensure a healthy society.
1.- Do favors for the pleasure of helping:
When you show kindness to someone who needs it, you have changed the world for the better in that moment. You touched the life of a person who, with that positive state of mind that you gave them with your kindness, will touch many more. Thus a drop creates a wave until the end of time, for eternity. It is possible that because of your past you have a small desire to achieve something else, but do not cling to it. It will dissolve on its own if you focus on the pleasure of having done your part to heal the planet. Few pleasures compare to it.
2.- Value your growth:
In my life I have failed at a lot of things. Relationships too. But there is something that has prevented me from perceiving all those moments with regret, or as wastes of time that "will never come back," as they say: Because those things happened to me, I am a different person. If you pay attention of the person you become later you will have realized that you are more intelligent, wise and cautious than the person you were before. In exchange for a potentially negative experience you gained a super power. Therefore, I never regret my mistakes, thanks to everything they have taught me. Thanks to them I can be here, sharing with you something that could help you. I wish I had more time so I could make more mistakes.
Thank you very much for reading and I hope it has been useful to you in some way. A hug!
