Now you may have come across someone yawning and you'll be like...

How can he yawn so brazenly like that?

Or for our Nigerian readers

Swallow me ooooo πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Yeah, yawning in public by far is one of the simplest acts that could bring much embarrassment...

At least for humans...

In the animal world, yawning is taken far more seriously, as one wrong yawn and you could be dead.πŸ’€βš°οΈ
Although if you're a top predator in your community, you're free to yawn as wide and as openly as you wantπŸ˜‚...
Just take a look at my pelican friend here...

Now calm down all you animal lovers πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
He's not in need of the Animal EU or something so don't dial your vet yet.

Pele, the pelican is just back from a long day of fishing for the family and kids, and now he's relaxing watching the sun set and has a big yawn.

Now please note for some birds, sitting leisurely and yawning like this is just you being suicidal, but Pele is the top dog of the neighborhood.
The only thing mildly annoying is the human tourists walking around and taking a picture of everything they see...
A bird can't yawn safely without being posted on the internet.

Now most of you may be wondering why the yawn looks like that?
Well sorry to say that Pelicans are already known as weird birds due to their beaks

Sorry Pele

Now this whole image of yawning in your mind can be coined into one term...

Glottis Exposure ✨

This is when the pelican stretches it's mouth pouch in a yawning-like motion and it drops over, exposing it's throat and other not-supposed-to-be-exposed bits for all to see.
Here's an image so you can better understand the process

Now although there are some theories, but the reason why this birds do these isn't yet known.
One of the most agreed on theories is that the birds do these to readjust their neck and pouch muscles and tissues.
I also read one that I think I agree with that how it may be used to clear unwanted debris or fish that may be stuck in the pouch somehow Extreme brushing πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

It should be noted though, that it's not only Pelicans that shows this type of yawn...
Alas their close family members, the shoebills also yawn like kings....
Exposing quite a lot of spineπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

And now, here's a video, so you'll see how the movement looks in real life πŸ˜€

After seeing that, I've gotta ask...

How Sleepy are you?πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
