Tyrian purple is a pigment made from the mucus of several species of Murex snail. Production of Tyrian purple for use as a fabric dye began as early as 1200 BC by the Phoenicians, and was continued by the Greeks and Romans until 1453 AD, with the fall of Constantinople.
Just goes to show you how great the quality of this stuff is ๐, 3 whole civilizations used it and it's still booming ๐.
Although maybe not as much, only a handful of people make the dye now. The preparation is both tedious and ghastly for the snails involved ๐.
Due to its rarity and difficulty to make, it was rather very expensive to procure.
In a 301 CE price edict from the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian, we learn that one pound of purple dye cost 150,000 denarii or around three pounds of gold. That's about $19,000 bucks for a single pound. ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ
Although now, due to customers getting wiser and different unfortunate (for the makers) activities, it is now sold at a humble price of $2,000 dollars๐ข
Although the snails where used to make this dye in the thousands, it's quite extraordinary that they aren't extinct, although they are rare to find, but the shell are relatively common ๐.
