I sometimes laugh at how people in the 1990s would react if they were suddenly thrown back into the present. Imagine their confusion when they see people constantly looking down at little glowing boxes in their hands, or when they hear talk of “tweets,” “virals,” and “influencers.”

Our world is changing at an unimaginable pace. I remember playing outside until dusk as a kid, shouting to friends from fence to fence. Today, kids often “play” through screens, befriend algorithms, and learn about the world through YouTube.

Technology has certainly made our lives easier—or so it claims. We can order food from a tap, work from the beach (if the internet connection is good), and talk to family halfway across the world as if they were in the next room. But there’s a strange irony: the more digitally connected we become, the more disconnected we become as humans.

Climate change is a real threat. The seasons are unpredictable—sometimes I wonder if I should bring an umbrella or sunglasses to the office. News of natural disasters comes one after another, as if nature is trying to convey the message that it is tired of our behavior.

Indeed, global politics today is like a never-ending soap opera. Many developed countries are playing "Truth or Dare" with consequences that impact the world globally. And strangely, social media also makes things worse. Strangely, everyone feels like a geopolitical expert after reading Twitter threads and other media.

Nevertheless, I personally still have hope amidst all this "madness". The younger generation is increasingly critical and cares about the future of the earth. Sustainable innovations continue to emerge. Awareness of the importance of mental health is increasing. Diversity and inclusivity are values that are fought for.

Reassuringly, amidst the complexity of the modern world, simple things still have their own power. A cup of morning coffee can still change your mood. Children's laughter is still the most beautiful music. A warm hug is still the most powerful stress reliever.

Perhaps that is the essence of the current state of the world: a paradox between progress and a longing for simplicity, between disconnection and connectivity, between global anxiety and personal hope. What is certain is that we live in interesting times–if sometimes too interesting for our comfort.

And as the old adage, modified by me, goes: “The world is crazy, sane people laugh at it and still contribute positively.”

At least that is how I see our world today–with a bitter smile but still optimistic, because change is the only constant we can count on.
