Hello, beer lovers! 🍻
How are you doing?
What's here: It's cold, rainy, and windy. Winter is coming slowly but surely. Outdoor activities have come to a halt, and we’re staying warm indoors—each in our own way. As for me, I’m all in on #beersaturday — I can’t remember which one anymore.
There are only a few of us left, but that doesn't change anything at all 😜
I have two cans in front of me, one English and one Slovenian, both filled with Double IPAs.
I’ll be happy to share my bitter beer experience with you.
🍻 😎 🍻
First, the one with less alcohol
Big Job Double IPA
Brewed by St Austell Brewery, St. Austell, Cornwall, England.
Bottle 0.5 L, alcohol 7.2% ABV, IBU 54. Double or Imperial IPA.
What do the Master Brewers say?
We’ve been crafting brilliant beer and welcoming guests into our pubs across the South West for over 170 years. Big Job is a BIG beer, jammed with as many big hops as we could get our hands on and packed full of tropical grapefruit and juicy blackcurrant flavors. If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing!
I’m familiar with this brewery; most of their beers are quite tasty.
The beer is golden, with an average head. It has a distinct aroma of hops and tropical fruits. It goes down smoothly, and on the palate I taste strong hop bitterness with citrus notes, especially grapefruit and lemon.
The hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.
A smooth and tasty beer!
Although it’s very hoppy and I can barely taste any sweetness, it’s not the most extreme Double IPA I’ve tried. It’s very well-crafted and even won a gold award in its category—Country Winner—at the 2022 World Beer Awards.
It’s not available locally; you can only find it at specialty stores for €4.59.

Quantum Double IPA
Brewed by Pivovarna Pelicon, Ajdovščina, Slovenia.
Bottle, 0.5 L, alcohol 8.0% ABV, IBU N/A. Double IPA style.
What do the Master Brewers say?
According to Pelicon, a Double India Pale Ale (DIPA) is a blend of hoppy notes, a rich body, and—most likely—tropical fruits such as peaches and blueberries. The likelihood that you’ll also detect a long, bitter finish is much greater than the chance of a pink whale swimming past you.
Pelicon Brewery is one of Slovenia's best-known craft breweries. Its beers are also above average.
The beer is a clear golden color; the head is average and fades quickly. It has a tropical fruit aroma. It goes down smoothly; on the palate, I taste hop bitterness, apricots, blueberries, and grapefruit.
The hop bitterness and grapefruit linger in the aftertaste for quite some time.
A drinkable and tasty beer!
I was expecting extreme bitterness, but it wasn’t there. It’s not hazy, but it has a pleasant fruity-citrusy hop profile. Although 8% ABV is no small amount, the bitterness masks it well. It’s listed among the world’s best beers in The Pocket Beer Book (Tim Webb, 2017).
It’s not available locally here, but it costs €3.69 at a specialty store.
🍻 😎 🍻
And what am I listening to when writing this and tasting beer? Something from my Friday #newtunes.
Thank you for your attention.
