How amazing are Comets? These celestial objects zooming through our solar system and coming to say hi to us Earthlings every few years, like this one, or every few decades like some others.
Comet 46P visits us every 5 years, but at different points in orbit. This time, is the closest it has been in over 70 years, at just about 7 million miles away. So this is a rare chance indeed to get a peek at this amazing event!
Unfortunately, last night was the closest encounter, yet it was cloudy here in Massachusetts. But it's still great visibility for about another week or so, even with the naked eye, or binoculars. So if you're reading this, look it up on Google to see where it is in your sky, and try to catch a glimpse!
I don't have some of the awesome equipment I wish I did to photograph the heavens, so I made it work with what I have, my tripod and a 135mm f2.0 lens on a crop sensor body for that little bit extra reach, coming in at around 200mm.
I hope to make it up to the mountains this week and maybe get a bit better shot, with less light pollution, but still probably won't compare to having a longer lens, and an astro tracker, but I'll do what I can!
You can see Comet 46P as the brightest dot just below the middle of the image!
