DISCUSSION TOPIC:
Appreciate Each Other's Beauty
BIBLE READING:
Song of Songs 4:1; 5:1
Qs. 2. See Questions HERE.
DISCUSSION:
Observe how the lover describes the beauty of his bride (vs. 1-7) and how she has won his heart with her looks, her dress and her words (vs. 9-11). See 6:4-9 and 7:1-7 for other exuberant descriptions of the beloved beauty. To the lover, every part of the beloved's physical body, from her hair to her toes is an embodiment of beauty.
Tell your wife (and not any other woman) that she is beautiful. Appreciate her from her head to her toes. God loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). He appreciates you the way you are. You are his perfect creation and when he looks at you, he sees no flaws (v. 7). Indeed, you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14).
Read 4:12; 5:1 again. Take note of the phrases used to describe her virginity (v. 12). This bride has kept herself exclusively for her husband. Our African culture value and celebrate virginity, but it is fast becoming a lost value. Is there anything we can do to return to those cherished and very biblical values? The bride invites her lover into his garden (v. 16); before marriage, her body was hers; after wedding, her body now belongs to her husband - all that she is and has now belongs to him and he partakes of them freely (5:1). See Paul's advice to husbands and wives in 1 Corinthians 7:4-5.
What next?
As husband and wife, show your appreciation for each other by reading aloud to each other the following passages. Husband (4:1-7, 9-11); wife (5:10-16).
Prayer:
Pray that those words shall be your true and daily confession for each other.
