I have read that green tomatoes ripen better in a dark place. I have always put them in cardboard flats under the bed, checking them daily to find the ripe ones. Some years, when I planted way too many tomato plants, I had boxes of green tomatoes lined up along the hallway as well. Sometimes they were still ripening in November.
