These pictures were taken a week ago, actually. I just didn't get around to posting them. I was so thrilled to finally harvest enough lettuce to make a salad! It was cool and wet most of May and June, so the garden has been growing very slowly.
On impulse, I bought half a dozen small kale plants rather late in the season, and planted them in a flower pot on the deck, where the ground squirrels won't eat them. So I also was able to cut a nice little heap of kale to add to the salad.
The tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, and carrots all came from the grocery store, but since then I have finally harvested one little radish.
The largest tomato plant has blossoms on it, and even two tiny green tomatoes. (One of the plants @generikat gave me!) The zucchini and winter squash plants remain small, but are developing blossoms anyway. The cucumber plants still don't look very happy. There are flat pods on the pea vines, the pole beans are climbing up the poles, and the potatoes have been hilled three times and look good.
I probably complained in an earlier post about all the greedy rodents that have invaded the garden this year. They keep chewing off the tops of the beets before they get more than 2" tall. They also ate some of the kohlrabi that finally came up. So I dug up the remaining eight kohlrabi plants, put them into another flower pot, and relocated them to the safety of my deck next to the kale! Take that, you pesky little varmints!
Now if the sun will just keep shining like it ought to this time of year, maybe my garden will finally get the chance to grow properly and yield some more vegetables. I am cheering it on!
