Enter the mind...
Welcome, and thank you for reading this post. I am one person who has studied the subconscious mind for years, and while I can tell you it is real, yet you would have to experience what it is before you absorbed it into your own value system.
I could explain the theory of it all day, and let's just understand it is connected to the emotional part of who you are. We as human beings get hooked into the logical box of thinking, and while logic is necessary and functional the subconscious mind surpasses that area of the brain. From here on out I will call the subconscious mind the "S-Mind" to shorten it.
The S-Mind is definitely emotional. We can logic our lives through and through and be little logic boxes that walk around, and yet some of us can't understand why habits are deeply rooted, and beyond our logic and reasoning. Let's take a peak at the facts of the S-Mind.
The S-Mind does not know if something is real or imagined. The logical mind wrestles with this one (I think its hilarious) and still can't get it, or want to get it. If you do a fire drill, and It is a drill and it is fake, yet when first responders actually do drills that are closer to reality they then have a stronger mental NOTE in the S-mind. The more real the drill the better equipped they are in the S-Mind.
The S-Mind is not logical. It never was, and it is the part of you that wrestles against the tide of habit. If you have a habit, and struggle against it you'll know why. Let's say you smoke, your brain says "I want to quit". This is the logical part of you, yet you can find the reason why you still do... You can't break the habit it easily.
If it is hurting you then why the fuck do it? Your logic can't reason with it at all. You wrestle against the S-Mind. The deep reason would be self love. If you loved your health and hold values towards it then why would you smoke? It is obvious to a logic person (who thinks logic is so super damn awesome) that they too wrestle and struggle with it, and can't explain it, or make excuses as to why a habit is there.
The conscious mind (logical) has to work incredibly hard to overcome the habit. This is why you can read hours and hours of diet books and still struggle with food. It is helpful don't get me wrong, but it is the long way into the mind. The level of emotion must be raised, and our military knows this very well for recruitment.
Your conscious mind may slide through many old memories, and your subconscious does not do this. There is an old saying "We are what we are taught." Education affects our subconscious, just much slower...
The subconscious mind contains the seeds of "Your considered truths." Negative ideas and beliefs are programmed at an early age. The mind can be programmed with new ideas and new education subliminal or not.
Our very beliefs are nothing more than thoughts from our world. It is obvious that these were shaped during the ages of 2 through 12. I consider this the formative years where we are formatted as a child. Our values, ideas, beliefs, and superstitions were all entered into our minds.
The S-Mind is responsible for your beliefs, and your programming. The conscious logical mind has a will and it can impress upon it the new ideas, and this takes work.
When we evaluate a belief we run it through these 5 basic filters.
Thought #1
"I like that belief. It works!"
Thought # 2
"I don't know; it sounds like it would not fit me or my personality."
Thought #3
"I don't care if this belief fits me, or not; therefore, it is not high up on my values list."
Thought #4
"Maybe that belief will work for me."
Thought #5
"I violently oppose the idea, it goes against everything I believe. It is not what Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister has taught me."
The S-Mind gains advantage from repetition, not logic. You can logically research music theory and understand it. If you don't get off your ass and play the instrument then your nothing more than a knowledge expert, and not an instrument expert. It can be applied to the field, and can be useful only if applied. Nothing against music theorists.
Knowledge and application are too different concepts of Pedagogy. Learning by doing, and embodying the knowledge is important.
Our logic goes through inner civil war with the subconscious. It is a war, and can you get your mind to not wrestle with ideas that are empowering?
Beliefs come in two flavors: Empowering, Disempowering. When have you questioned yours?
