The California Bay Bridge extends from Oakland to San Francisco linking San Francisco to the east bay. The Bay Bridge was built by American Bridge Company, it opened on Thursday, November 12, 1936, six months before the world famous Golden Gate Bridge. The Bay Bridge was built with as a two level bridge. It originally carried automobile traffic on its upper deck and commuter trains (Key System) on the lower, but after the Key System abandoned rail service on April 20, 1958, the lower deck was converted to regualar vehicle traffic as well. On October 12, 1963, traffic was reconfigured so that the upper deck only handled vehicle traffic going westbound into San Francisco and eastbound traffick heading towards Oakland, on the lower deck.
The Bay bridge is basically two bridges joined by an island in the middle of the bay called Treasure Island. In 1989 California suffered a large earthquake which collapsed a portion of the upper deck on the span between Oakland and Treasure Island. The span between Oakland and Treasure Island was repaired for traffick but was in need of a upgrade. A new bridge was built in 2002 next to the old bridge and did not have the traditional upper and lower deck but instead had two decks side by side. The new bridge changes into an upper deck and lower deck as it enters into a tunnel on Treasure Island. The span between Treasure Island and San Francisco remain unchanged and still a two deck bridge, with the uppe and lower configuration.
I decided to go out to Treasure Island and photograph the Bay Bridge from the island towards the city of San Francisco. I hope you enjoy!
