Today at 1:00 UTC over 100 organisations took part in a call to determine whether all of the requirements for an EOS mainnet launch were ready to go. Roughly 45 minutes later, watched by over 1800 people on Youtube, the organisations voted unanimously to launch the EOS mainnet 24 hours later.
A set of appointed block producers will now move to get the network ready to go live and these groups have already been designated. Once the network is is ready, another series of validation steps will be necessary before the blockchain will launch.
Barring any hiccups of bugs, EOS voters will then be invited to vote for a set of block producers. 15% of tokens have to be staked to vote so the first set of Block Producers can be elected to start.
Many of the block producers candidates have put in a lot of time and money to get the network up and running. What happens to those that don't receive a coveted spot as a top 21 BP? It will be interesting to see whether BP candidates that are unsuccessful move to launch a rival version of EOS. It will mean double the tokens for EOS holders, but it will cause immense confusion within the cryptocurrency community as to which blockchain is the main EOS network. Only time will tell.
