Under normal circumstances, we find it difficult to accept that others feel, think, and act differently, and that their way is just as valid as our own. In extreme situations, this is even harder to accept. Nature has become extreme, and so has human nature. We have witnessed acts of heroism saving lives, acts of depravity obstructing rescue efforts, and acts of manipulation claiming that one thing or another has been nothing more than media fabrications. My dad used to say, "I don't believe what history books say because history is writtenâin their own wayâby the victors." Everything is complicated; we're all biased, mentally, and emotionally we're all cracked and broken. We don't know what to do with all this internal turmoil... whether you call it fear or not, guilt or not. Most of us don't know what to do with our inner selves... how difficult it is to understand someone else's inner world. Well... it's not about understanding, but about accepting. One person cries while another listens to music; each is clinging to a burning ember. One person watches everything on TikTok, another isolates themselves from the news. It's because one needs to see and the other needs not to see. Here, a dry law was decreed as part of the official, general mourning. There would have been those who took refuge in alcohol to vent, to loosen up, not to celebrate. Some, with a twisted sense of humor, repeat the phrase of a very popular comedian from a few decades ago who wondered if it could be that We Venezuelans in our previous incarnation took the baby bottle away from the Baby Jesus somewhere, and that is why we have received so many blows from different directions for so long.
