When the computer was first invented, it used to take up entire rooms. However, things have changed. The Smartphone in your pocket which you use to watch cat videos and share memes is a device which is much more powerful, in all respects than a computer from a decade ago.

Just how is this possible?
How can a device which almost fits in your palm become more powerful than a machine the size of a house?
Ever wondered how your Smartphone became “smart”?
The answer lies inside it.

If we were to choose one invention which changed the entire course of electronics, it should have to be the transistor. Replacing the bulky vacuum tubes, the transistor was a real game changer. Circuits became more compact and much cheaper. Basically, a transistor is a device used to switch a circuit on and off, so that our devices can digest and process signals and information. They can be considered as the building blocks for the brains of all the “smart” devices. An array of transistors arranged in the required pattern in a circuit can work wonders. The same basic component which switches the circuit is used to accomplish all the tasks which our computers and smartphones are doing.
