Hello, there!
@saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!
It all started when I suddenly noticed that Pandemonium was no longer a ruleset that players could encounter in battle, but as I continued to look at the game modifiers, I discovered that there are more of the rulesets that players can no longer find in the game without any explanation. For some of them, I can understand why they were gone because they just make the player experience worse, but for some, I really can't find a reason why they were gone. I'm a little conflicted on which of the two I should put Back To Basics in, because I can see why many players don't like it, but it is one of the oldest rulesets in the game, and among the currently available rulesets, I think that there are some more problematic rulesets than this.
Still, when I tried to look at Back To Basics on the available rulesets while creating custom challenges, it did not appear, so it is reasonable to rule out that the ruleset was no longer available in the game.
Back To Basics
Including the recently added game modifier, Splinterlands now has a total of 82 Game Modifiers. This is if we include all the seasonal rulesets as well as all the inactive ones. As you all know, game modifiers are a vital part of the game, as it changes the conditions that could affect the result of every battle. Depending on which rulesets are at play can dramatically influence what cards players will use, as they have to adapt their tactics on the fly so that they can win the battle. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that the Game Modifiers can sometimes pose more of a threat than your opponent.
Among all the game modifiers that were no longer part of the ruleset circulation in battles, Back To Basics was the oldest game modifier. It was already in the game before I even started playing Splinterlands, and there are certain plays that players can only pull out during this ruleset, which has the following description.
Back To Basics
Units lose all abilities.
Simply put, during Back To Basics, all the default abilities of card units cannot be used in battle, so players will have to rely more on the stats as well as Attack Order and Accuracy of the units when building their lineup. That said, the abilities that were granted by the Archon, including tactics, will remain to be useable by the units, as they were placed after the ruleset. And since Bloodlines are technically not abilities, units can still gain buffs and abilities from Bloodline Dominion.
So when we speak of Back To Basics, it does not completely deprive the players of abilities; it just became limited to what abilities the archons can provide, and if it is tactics, on which card the ability will be granted, which is what the nature of the mechanic.
If I say where this ruleset could be really annoying was when playing Survival Mode, because units losing their default abilities may result in them losing the battle, and when you lose in Survival Mode, your cards will undergo a cooldown period before you can use them. Right now, that cooldown period has been reduced by 99%, but that will only be effective while the liquidity bot testing is taking place. But then, if you compare it to rulesets like Anemic or Global Warming, I think that **Back To Basic ** was still more tolerable.
Closing
So that was it for Back To Basics. Will it ever return in the ruleset circulation? I don't know, but when it comes to rulesets, there are some rulesets in the rotation that I hate more than Back to Basics.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
