Wounds caused by betrayal could take eternity to heal...hence, stay with me as I share with you as prompted by @hive-learners a story of trust, pain and regret.
Our friendship was second to none. We had everything in common; soul winning, writing, public speaking, reading (and reading really hard and long). Infact, we were almost like twins.
"Is he your brother?" People often asked but with a kind smile, I'll shake my head in response. "But you two look alike!". "Yes we do, but he's a dear friend", I'd say.
Of course we looked alike and honestly, I loved it. Especially because he was involved but little did I know that my this will turn into a regret for me because again he was involved.
One cool night when we went to study inside the Campus, in a particular class we picked because of the ventilation and quietness it had.
After about 45 minutes of studying, I decided to rest my head for some minutes when my rest was cut short when he came asking if I was with my phone.
Perplexed, I said no and asked why he was looking for my phone if he was with it. He said he was charging it and left to use the rest room only for him to come back and see that the phone had disappeared leaving the charger behind.
My 2 weeks old Tecno Spark 4 Air worth 39,000 naira ($78) that my Dad got for me was gone.
For the first time in months, I felt a weird fever run through my body.
I was so crossed with him like I've never been before since we became friends. "If you were going to use the rest room, you should have informed me about it or carried it with you knowing how people's devices have been stolen here in the past."
He apologised and promised to help me retrieve my SIM cards ( service provider cards) the next day and then to use his scholarship funds that was to be sent to him at the ending of the month to replace the stolen phone.
I returned home from school due to the Covid-19 lockown and explained to me Dad what happened and he gave me a strength warning that my friend better kept to his word or else...
That's where he stopped his sentence and a hot air of suspense flung in. I assured him that he had nothing to worry about.
The month was coming to an end and I hadn't heard a word from him. I had to keep saying to myself "He'll call me and do as he promised. Maybe the scholarship funds have been delayed been delayed some days because of the lockdown."
Still drowned in these thoughts, my Dad called me to come to room, he had something to show me.
From the look on his face , he was very enraged but trying hard not to let it out. He opened a message and gave it to me. The message was from an unknown sender. It read:

It was written in the ink of lies..
I sunk deep into depression. How could he? I thought I knew him? Despite the laughter, stories, pains, past mistakes we shared?
"No there must be a mistake somewhere. Maybe that was not from him." But as much as I had wanted it to be the wrong person, he was the one. He mentioned his name in the message and it was sent from his number!
It took all the love and trust my Dad had for me in addition to the pleas of my Mum and elder sister not to rain down severe punishments on me for that.

My spirit was broken, wanting to cry but tears seemed to find no exit from my lacrimal gland, a big injury had seared my heart that took over a year to heal.. I had lost trust in anyone. I tried with every single nerve in my system and every part of heart not to hate him...
Betrayal became his pay but I was rest assured that he'd be hunted down by karma for his misdeeds till this very day.
Till next time, keep loving...
PS: The real names of the characters in the story, I changed to fictional names for the purpose of this article only.
