I think at the height of the game there were 14 players. For the most part the I think there were only about 7 regulars who showed up every week and 3 to 4 others that would just drop in every so often.

I personally use point buy since you can replicate the "Standard Array" with it. Plus if you play in anything official, like at a Con or Adventurers League, you have to use one or the other.

All of this is great stuff. Discord has made it easier for me. I usually make a server channel for the game and just post notes and player information there. Its also good for AMA nights were you can answer
