Search for Charaka and Sushruta, you will find information, that will surprise you - Charaka is regarded as the father of Ayurveda and Sushruta is regarded as the 'Father of Indian Medicine' and 'Father of Plastic Surgery' - Sushruta wrote one of the world's earliest works on medicine and surgery in 6th century BCE. The more you read on them, you will find it very interesting but it gives one message - they are proven.
As you know, I am in my native and I have started using some herbal medicines for my father. He has a very long history of dry cough and none of the English medicines helps. It provides more discomfort to him, when he sleeps. Few years back, I did found out a herbal medicine that worked but it has lot of ingredients, so I have decided to prepare it in the week-end as it will need more time. For immediate assistance see what I got.
Pipli or Long pepper or Indian long pepper (Piper longum) and along with that I also got Jangi haritaki ( Terminalia Chebula). There are several types of haritaki and the one I got are smaller ones. These have several other benefits, but this works nice for cold and cough. And thankfully, we still have a shop that specially deals with all raw Ayurveda products - they are running this shop since four generations.
You just need to grind the Pipli and Jangi haritaki and then consume it with honey. Jangi haritaki is very hard and it may break the grinder blades - so you need to break them to smaller pieces.
Take one teaspoon of the mix and one teaspoon of honey and mix them well in a small container and consume it. Don't swallow it and drink water like English medicine. Instead consume it by tasting every bit of it - like a chocolate. As it passes through your throat, it will do the magic. And don't drink water for half an hour at least. If you really need to drink water, then drink before.
And the result ? You will instantly feel it. He has got some good relief from this and it was easy to prepare this quickly. I am going to prepare the other ingredient soon. I remember last time, after trying several English medicine we tried this - it is a true gem. It's told, even it cures whooping cough - that is why I kept it in writing in my purse, and its there since long.
I will definitely post about this when I prepare. Herbal medicine is slowly fading its glory because many people believe in short term quick treatment. Also getting these is not easy in big cities - unless you know the exact place. But where there is a will, there is a way. I remember my Mom used to give us only herbal medicines in our childhood. She had couple of books from a very famous Ayurveda doctor late Laxman Mishra ( died in 1989) that provided means of easy treatment by using home remedies that primarily used herbal components. It was first published in 1960 and has been published many times since then. When I tried to find them at our home, she said, unfortunately those books are not with her any more. So I tried to find those books and could find out them online - PDF version. Thanks to technology - this is the cover page and you can imagine what message it gives. I will write a separate post on this, but if you are searching for any herbal remedy for any disease, do let me know. I will try to find out from this book. Do you know most of the people in my place don't go to hospital for Jaundice and instead get all right by using herbal medicine ? You will believe in the power of herbal medicine only after you use them few times- they do magic.
