I never thought that helping someone achieve their dreams could eventually become the reason you lose everything you thought you had built together. When I met her, I had never stepped inside a classroom. I could read a little and write my name, but formal education had never been part of my life. I had grown up believing that a person could still make something of himself through hard work, honesty and determination but Amara was different. She was intelligent, ambitious and determined to go to university. She came from a modest background, and although she had the ability to succeed, she didn't have the money to pursue her dreams.
I decided to help Amara, in sacrifice of my own betterment, i paid her university fees, bought the things she needed for school and supported her whenever she needed money. I never saw it as a burden. I believed that if I could help someone I loved become successful, then her success would eventually become our success. After completing university, she wanted to pursue a master's degree abroad. Canada was the dream., again, I supported her.
I paid for the applications, contributed towards her tuition and helped with the expenses that came with travelling. Whenever people asked why I was doing so much for someone who wasn't yet my wife, I simply told them that we were building a future together. Eventually, we got married and i laughed in their faces, for i thought i had the last laugh. I remember that period clearly. I was proud of her, and she constantly told me that she would never forget everything I had done for her.
"I will bring you over once I settle down," she told me. Those words became my hope, she travelled to Canada, and for the first few months, everything seemed fine. We spoke regularly. She told me about her studies, her new environment and the difficulties of adjusting to a new country. Then things slowly began to change, her calls became less frequent and her conversations became shorter. Sometimes, when I called, she would sound irritated that I had disturbed her.
I tried not to think too much about it. I told myself she was busy trying to establish herself. After all, this was the future we had both worked towards. Eventually, she arranged for me to join her. I arrived in Canada believing that I was finally going to begin the life we had spent years planning. Instead, I discovered that the woman I had married seemed to have become a completely different person. She began correcting the way I spoke. She complained about my lack of education and became embarrassed whenever I struggled with things that were unfamiliar to me. Sometimes she introduced me to people without mentioning that I was her husband. Other times, she would make jokes about my education in front of her friends. I could feel the respect disappearing.
One evening, after I made a mistake while filling out a form, she looked at me and said something I will never forget. "You don't even understand how things work here. I don't know why I thought bringing you was a good idea." I said nothing, i had spent years helping her become the woman she wanted to be, but now she seemed ashamed of the man who had helped her get there. Our marriage eventually collapsed.
She filed for divorce, and the reason became painfully obvious. She had become educated, established and socially comfortable, while I was still the same man who had never gone to school. I was no longer the status symbol she wanted beside her, the divorce broke me, but I eventually accepted it. I returned home and tried to rebuild my life. Then came the part that I never saw coming. Some time after the divorce, a disagreement arose concerning the children. I had always believed they were mine. I had loved them, provided for them and considered myself their father. During the dispute, a truth emerged that completely shattered me, the children were not biologically mine. I refused to believe it. I asked questions and searched for explanations. I wanted someone to tell me there had been a mistake.
The woman I had sacrificed so much for had not only stopped loving me; she had built a family with me while hiding the truth about the children. That was my rude awakening, i had spent years believing that love meant sacrifice. I believed that if you helped someone reach the top, they would remember who stood beside them when they were climbing. I believed it was black and white, do good on to people and good will be done to you, simple as that!!
But i was taught something different, I lost my marriage. I lost the family I thought I had. I lost years that I could never recover, eventually i stopped asking why she had changed but the harder question was why I had ignored the signs for so long. If someone shows you who they are, believe them. Dont make excuses for them all in the name of love or trust The greatest rude awakening wasn't discovering that she no longer loved me, maybe she never even did.
