ENVRIONMENTAL HAZARD SERIES: Erosion. Effects and Control Measures
In line with our discussion yesterday about Erosion, More still need to be talk about it. Lets elaborate its effects and ways to mitigate against it when it becomes a serious danger to humanity.
EFFECTS OF EROSION
The modification of the earth 's crusts by the erosional agents can be magnificent and profound. Some great landmarks are created by these factors. They serves great purposes to humans too. Lets talk about One among them.
CANYON
Over time, the river along its path can wore it away forming a rift between the mountains. This actions continue for years along this weak path and carry away its sediments and desposits it far away.
This modification takes different elevations and sizes but the unique feature about it is that its occur as a result of erosional agent mostly river over geologic time frames. There is intermingled of hard and soft rock where its erodes away while the hard rock stands due to its resistant to weathering. Notable example of Canyon includes the Grand Canyon, Arizonia, Provo Canyon in Utah, and several others along the Himalayas, Rocky, Andes, Altas and other mountains on the world.
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF CANYON
This landform looks exactly like valleys because its surrounded by cliffs and mountains but their differences is in their formations. Canyon are formed by actions of river over time while valley resulted by teotonic forces.
Are they positive impacts of Canyon to humans? Yes. Lets talks about them.
Good Tourist sites. Many fun seekers find pleasure in this landforms. There are many activities that carried out in those areas. They includes; biking, Hiking and birdwatching etc. Good recreational site for restorts and picnic.
Biodiversity. Several plant and animal species thrives there especially where huge bodies of rivers exists. Its a good place to interact with nature.
- Climatic Resiliency: There is actions of land and sea breeze over the land. There will be tranqualities and balance.
EFFECTS OF EROSION OVER AGRICULTURE
The humus content and action of soil microbes are found mostly on the top soil. These two factors including the water and air makes the portion of soil profile more fertile and home for plants. If erosion occurs, these will lead to
Low yield of Crop, the crop will lack certain nutrient for better productions.
High loss of crop.
High Production costs as control measures might be implemented.
Reduced ability of the soil to retain water and nutrients.
High prevelence of runoffs and wearing away of nutrients.
The subsoil are exposed and their physical and chemical contents are affected.
Migrations of animals from the affected areas.
EFFECTS OF EROSION ON HUMAN SETTLEMENT
Buildings of various types are seriously threatened when erosion occurs. Many building with strong structure have capsided and demolished by this erosion.
Migration of Human to safer regions. Many people have run away from the land of origin when erosion of greater magnitude occurs.
Distruption of Socio - economic activities. When bridges and markets collasped, human and their activities are seriously affected.
Good land for constructions are turned wasteland by this factor.
- Roads, Bridge, buildings and other edifices collasped and destroyed.
CONTROL MEASURES OVER EROSION
Proper Forestry management. Vegetation should never be cleared off. Selective exploration of forest resources should be implemented and unlincensed tree fellers should be arrested and pesercuted.
Public Enlightenment: people should be trained on sustainability measures and encourage to implement their significances.
Afforestation and Cover- crop should be encouraged and financed by the power that be.
Affected areas should be marked out and regenerative measures implemented.
