Clothes are more than just the materials that we use to cover our body. Whether you realise it or not, the clothes you wear on a daily basis tell a story to the world around you. They are actually a tool for communication. You will be surprised to know this, but the truth is that your clothes will introduce you before you even open your mouth to speak. This is why dressing well is not about buying expensive designer clothes, neither is it about being vain. Rather it is about showing respect for yourself, proving that you have your personal worth, and then building your personal brand the way you want others to see you.

Your clothing and your appearance should show self-respect. How you appear will reflect how you value yourself. When you take your time to select a clean, neat outfit that fits you, you are sending a powerful message. You are indirectly telling everyone that you matter. As a matter of fact, dressing well will change how you feel on your inside, and will also determine how you respond to the things on the outside. Have you every noticed that your mood will generally improve when you change from a rumpled dress to a well-ironed dress? This is because when you look good, it will send a positive signal to your brain, and it will work to improve your mood. In addition, when your mood is improved, you will relate better with people.

Your sense of dressing also tells people about your level of preparedness. When you dress well for a corporate event, you will send a signal that you have done your homework well, and it will also show that you respect the people in the environment. Imagine in a corporate gathering and someone comes to talk to you wearing a very messy and rumpled dress, will you give them your attention even if they are trying to make a point? Maybe not. But when they appear good, they would immediate command your attention. This goes to prove that you communicate with your clothes in ways that you may not even realise.

It is worthy to note that your appearance and the way you dress can open doors of opportunities that you never knew existed. And people will also trust you with a lot of things. I remember what happened some years back. I was invited for a particular event, it was about cultural heritage. While going to the event, I wore a traditional outfit that represented a particular culture. Unknowingly to me, one of the guest speakers was also from the same tribe. When he sighted me at the entrance, he walked to me and started a conversation with me. He was not wearing a traditional outfit, but he recognised mine. It was during our interaction that I got to know that he was from the tribe. We exchanged contacts, and that was how we became friends, and I have benefited a lot of things from the friendship. This shows you how powerful dressing can be.

In this era we live in, a lot of people are following after fashion trends, especially the ones they see online or in social media, without even considering if it is right for them. You do not have to follow every fashion trend in order to feel belonged. You are not trying to imitate them, neither are you trying to blend in. You should understand that every human is unique. That something worked for them does not mean that it will suit you as well. You have to also know that there are are different outfits for different people and for different occasions.

When dressing, you are not only dressing for an occasion, but it should also match with your inner values. People will first judge you by the way you appear before they even get the chance to hear you speak or see you act.

Your sense of dressing can influence how people will relate to you. People may not know your intentions, and they may not see what is going on in your mind, but they will see what you are wearing, and they will relate with you on that basis. You may have the purest of intentions, but someone can simply misjudge you because of the way you look. This is why you need to dress according to the impression you want to create, and according to the way you want to be addressed.
