A friend of mind started a business some months back and after about 6 months, there was little to nothing to show for the business. He got so bothered and when he was sharing his ordeal with me, I asked him a couple of questions that bordered around how knowledgeable he was financially and to my surprise, I discovered that he knew almost nothing about the financial aspect of his business. I mean, he did not know about budgeting, accounting information, balance sheet, etc. The truth is, to survive in the financial world and even in business, you have to possess some financial literacy.

From the story of my friend, one can infer that you will need a level of financial literacy before venturing into business or even investing financially. Take for example; someone that does not have a knowledge of how accounting records work will not know how to record both his profit, loss, expenditure, etc, and it may become a major bane to his business. Or maybe someone that does not know what budgeting entails may not effectively utilise that expect of finance and this will affect his business in the long run. Now, one may ask how and where someone can gain financial knowledge and literacy from.

In this era, the internet and other online media have provided us with abundance of information at our finger tips. You will be surprised that from the comfort of your internet-enabled device and through online multimedia, you can get access to instructional materials and tutorials that will assist you in gaining financial literacy. Asides from the online materials, there are also a host of other offline materials that can be useful in order to improve one's financial literacy. Like books, financial journals, etc.

In addition to the aforementioned, there is also a need to seek for help from the people that have results in the financial field. You can come under the mentorship and tutelage of any of them and learn a thing or two from them. I ask you; as a business person, when was the last time you attended a business or financial seminar and listen to financial experts speak and even get the opportunity to ask a couple of questions? All these will help to expose one to some financial nitty-gritty to excel in their business. You can also seek for professional financial advice and consultancy to help you understand a few things about finances.

Now that we have looked at where one can acquire financial literacy from, we shall be taking a look at the numerous benefits in it. Firstly, the level of financial literacy you have is directly proportional to the amount of good financial decisions you take. So when you have acquired extensive knowledge about finance, it will help to direct you to make a good financial decision. So you see why you cannot afford to take careless and uninformed decisions financially, to avoid putting the future of your business at risk.

More so, gaining financial literacy and knowledge will help you to either prevent or solve financial challenges. There are some financial challenges that people enter into by simply making a wrong financial move. I remember what a friend once said. He said that "one financial decision can either make or break you, so make the right decision." However, for you to make the right financial decision, you have to be informed rightly. Not just gulping a onetime knowledge, but keep upgrading and updating on the knowledge.

Apart from helping you to make the right decision and preventing/ solving financial challenges, gaining extensive financial knowledge can also make you a better person financially. There are somethings that you would not do or things that you should have done that you do not do; but having knowledge about finance will help you to know what to do or should not do, when to do it, and how to do it. In conclusion, if you want to live a better financial life, and if you want your business to thrive beyond its present level, then go for more knowledge.
