A few days back, a friend of mine shared with me about the mistake he made when he wanted to invest into a particular business. From his story, I got to realise that investment, especially for beginners require more than just putting in of one's money into a business, there are some points that should be considered before one can commit their funds, so as not to end up losing them. It is true that investment is a very potent tool to create profits and wealth, but it should be done rightly, so that it will not be counterproductive. Here, we will consider some points which someone who wants to invest their funds should take handy.

1. Have a plan of what to invest in

This is among the crucial and the first step of investment. If you do not have a plan of what to invest in or if you do not know which business to invest in, you may be liable to wrong investment. This reminds me of the statement of one of my friends: "if you do not know where you are going to, you will not know if you arrive, and everywhere will look like it." So in investment, you have to map out the plan of what you want to do, what to invest, how to invest. The planning for investment can include, but not limited to; where to invest, when to invest, what to invest, how to invest etc?

In planning, you should be able to answer the above questions and do them with clarity of mind. Knowing what to invest in is crucial, because not every investment, no matter how enticing it may look, is meant for you. Someone else may even be doing the business, but it is not a guarantee that if you do it you will excel at it. Then after knowing what to do, you have to consider the right location for it and then you will talk about when to start. All these are included in the basic investment planning.

2. Keep track of your investment

One of the major undoings of a lot of people in business is having no records of what they have invested and the proceeds from it. Obviously, if you do not have record of what you have invested, it will be very difficult to know if you are actually making profit or loss. So as a business person or an investor, you should note that proper accounting or record-keeping is very important, because it helps you to stay on the right course.

The truth is that if you cannot take accurate records of your investment at the infancy stage of your business, it will be almost impossible to do it if the business grows a bit. But if you begin at the start of your business, it will become part of your routine. As part of your record-keeping, you also need to record your profit and loss, your assets and liability, etc. These records will help you to consolidate on the actions that created the profits and avoid the actions that led to the losses. So record-keeping and accounting is very important to the success of a business.

3. Arm yourself with information

The information someone has about an investment is very important, and can determine the outcome of an investment. A business may be very potent and may even have the right location, but to invest into the same business, you also need to gather an extensive information about the business. Even when you are going into business for example, there is a need for you to learn about the business. Obviously, the more knowledge you have about a particular business, the better your chances of succeeding at it.

You will be surprised that a large majority of people that fail at business or at investment is not because the business is not good, but because they lack the required information and knowledge to run the business. Good enough, the internet has presented us with a ready access to a vast knowledge-base at the palms of our hands, so we should utilise it properly.
