No matter how someone is capable of doing something, he may still have limitations. However, when other people's strengths are joined to his own, then the job will be easier and faster. We all know that Messi is the current World's best footballer and a world class player. However, imagine in a football match and in one side, only Messi is there, and he is facing a complete team of 11 players. Even if the other team is not as talented as him, they will cheaply win him because they are a team and he does not stand a chance against them. In a teamwork, each one contributes and helps one another to achieve a common result. When you are helping someone to achieving greatness, you are also helping yourself to achieve the same greatness.

The power of teamwork cannot be overemphasized. Take the human body for example: each organ, no matter how small it is, has its own unique function and it is by the collective efforts of each of the organs in the body that the whole body functions maximally. This also brings me to the fact that no member of the team is less important than the rest of the team members. Imagine if the mouth feels like it is inconsequential and refuses to take in food, the stomach will receive nothing and the whole body will become weak.

In a team, to commit everyone to bring out their best towards greater good of the team, you have to make everyone feel important. In a football team for example, if you make only the players feel important and exclude the goalkeeper, it may dampen his morale, and this will become the major bane of the team. A friend of mind once shared his experience during his service year when he joined a particular choral group. When he joined, he discovered that the team leader always shows favouritism to certain people and they always lead the chorus and instrumentals. He observed that it was the same set of people that are used every time for functions and that made the rest of the team redundant.

He thought to himself, well, maybe things might change with time, but instead of changing, it continued the same way. In the defence of the team leader, she always gave the excuse that she uses the best hands because she needs perfection. But she forgot that everyone that is good started from somewhere. This made others not to learn and not to perfect on their skills. A day came when the preferables did not show up for a particular event because of some circumstances beyond their control. At that point, she was forced to use the available. However, because she had not been engaging the others in activities, their skills were not up to par, but she did not have any choice. That was how the enter choral team flopped at the event. If she had been carrying everyone along, the absence of a particular set of people will not be felt because others can fill in the gap.

The greatness of any team lies in everyone pulling their individual efforts together. That is, collating their strengths so as to make up for their weakness. Individual efforts may be faced with challenges but nothing will be able to withstand the combined strength of a team that is acting towards achieving a common goal. This is the reason why when you want to form a team, you should look out for people with a common goal. A broomstick cannot team with a toothpick to form a bunch of broom. To have a bunch of broom, the broomstick must team with other broomsticks.

It is true that teamwork is necessary towards the achievement of a task but the individual team members must have a common goal. If you must push a car, then everyone must combine their forces towards the same direction, not some pushing from the front and another pushing from the back. Singleness of purpose is one of the key requirements for making a good team. Remember, you have to act together to achieve more. This reminds me of the popular definition of TEAM as I conclude with it:

TEAM = Together, Everyone Achieves More.
