Thursday use here! Apart from the fact that it's the day of the week that I hate most, it is the day I pick up my groceries through the drive. Once when we had only two children, we were still going, crazy as we were, to do the groceries as they were right here in the supermarket with them in the cart. But since the arrival of the Mistouflon, I have been doing them online and if I find it very practical I don't necessarily find it easier.
Despite all my good will, my desire to eat better and waste less is futile because I know I'm going to throw food away, especially the fresh ones.
Even if it happens to me less and less, it's still too much. Yet I always try to finish what's left in the fridge in recipes of my own, Zozo calls it "my drudgery" but that's not enough and I'm not the only one living in this house. Except that I have a real problem with it.
And I hate to throw! Firstly, because I know that other people don't have the chance to eat enough food, secondly because it's expensive and we have a fairly tight food budget, and finally it increases the number of waste products, a subject on which I've become a real psychopath in recent months.
I don't know how we still manage food badly every week despite all my efforts. I have decided to set upan attack plan against my problem of conservation, dates, freshness.
For the preservation I received as a gift through a brand of towels, it was my mother who subscribed and we can be reassured as we can, there is a lot of glass container with lid, different sizes and colors, pretty enough in addition to being very practical.
As I want to completely eliminate the plastic film from my kitchen, it's a good time. Especially since I discovered, probably ten years after everyone else, I imagine cloth lids to cover the pots, plates and salad bowls. It would be better if I knew how to sew, I would make them myself but you can find some on the internet.
As far as vegetables are concerned, when the good weather comes back I will go and buy them directly from the grower. I no longer take them in a hive or AMAP because the quantities are too large and we don't like vegetables at home, at least not all vegetables. Certainly it is not organic but it is a sustainable agriculture product and prices remain affordable.
Finally I would have to think more about freezing, which is not my first reflex at all. I don't even think I ever do. Zozo generally finds that once the food is heated, it makes too much water.
The last point that I think is the main cause of the food waste in our family is my difficulty with men response to my cooking. I have some difficult men at home and cooking is sometimes a real headache, where people could be satisfied with an omelette or soup with a salad, here I would be almost laughing with such a menu.
Each French person would still throw away the equivalent of one whole meal a week, i. e. 20 kilos of food waste per year including 7 kilos of products still packaged!
So since this week, I'm not going to lie to you, I'm doing the shopping by applying new rules very easy:
• Draw up a shopping list beforehand
• Buy the quantities strictly necessary
• Freeze the food in excess before their expiry date
• Avoid letting yourself be tempted by products in reduction which are sometimes useless and
• Think about composting organic waste.
Yes that's it! If you have your own tips for avoiding food waste, don't hesitate to share them.
