For this week's share on #ttt or #threetunetuesday, as initiated by @ablaze, I went for harmonies. Deep, rich, lovely harmonies...the kind of harmonies that you love to listen to at full blast on vinyl (or with a "tad bit loud volume" with earbuds in). As many genres of music I've learned to appreciate over the years, I still love a good, rich harmony...so why not start with the kings of harmony?
I bet you thought I was going with Brian Wilson straight off of the bat, weren't you? Well, I do love myself a good Brian Wilson song and vocal, but this one is sung by brother Carl Wilson. The song originally came out of the Phil Spector / Ronnettes canon, and that version is very good...yet, there is something about the harmonies of the Beach Boys. Especially with earbuds in. And Mike Love doing whatever it is that Mike Love is doing / still does. Hey, he's still a Beach Boy though, and his bass vocals are amazing; what can you do? This one is an absolute Carl Wilson treat.
Oh man...the Zombies. A late find for me. I remember desperately trying to find their Odyssey and Oracle CD when I was in college. No luck, of course, as that stuff was hard to find in those days. I think the first time I was able to listen to it was after spending a week downloading it off of Napster courtesy of dial-up (you know what I mean, right???)
I listened to this album quite a bit and couldn't quite "get it." Then, one day while at work, I was listening to this song, and suddenly it all made sense. I could hear the Animal Collectives, Panda Bears, and all of those harmony bands of recent times in this song and song's chorus.
The Kinks were considered to be the "off-key" Beatles; the Zombies, I'd dare say, are the "off-key" Beach Boys. Highly cool, especially the chords (and those pagan lyrics). I do recommend this one with headphones, too.
And finally, another one for the headphones. Harmonies, harmonies, and harmonies...I love them! This one is found on (the very excellent, by the way) Macca album Ram. I've been listening to this song since the days of being in my parent's haunted basement courtesy of their old record player; this song has always been amazing to me for a long time. Did I mention harmonies yet? Well in case I did not, the harmonies are wonderfully fantastic on Dear Boy. The perfect blend of the Beatles and the Wilsons, with quite the crescendo to finish the song out.
I believe even Lennon was known to mention this song quite a bit as being a favorite of his. Well, John, I'd have to agree!
That's it for this week! More to come next #threetunetuesday !!! Thanks again @ablaze for hosting, and I do hope you enjoy my shares for this week!
