For this #threetunetuesday, as inspired by @ablaze, I went old-school psychedelia. No, not Beatles or Pink Floyd...not the Stones or Hendrix. Instead, I opted to use a recent NPR news article about a lost album from the 1960's to guide my way tonight. What lost album might that be?
The album was a work of love by future Patti Smith lead guitarist, Lenny Kayne, and was compiled while he worked at a record store in New York. Think High Fidelity, but real life, I guess. Kayne collected as many garage rock/psychedelic rock songs from the various regions of the US that managed to grace the airwaves at the time. Some rock historians went so far as to say that this was THE ALBUM that inspired punk rock. Who knows? I'm not a rock historical, but I do like a good garage rock song from a one-hit wonder band in the 1960s. A lot.
So with the set up, here we go!
The Electric Prunes : I Had to Much To Dream Last Night
This one leads it all off; the Prunes were a San Fernando Valley group formed in the mid 1960's. I have no idea if they were part of the Lauren Canyon scene (and the conspiracies around that whole thing), but this groups single was definitely cutting-edge and almost electronic in nature. It's catchy and indeed carries an "eerie ambiance." This is the perfect song to lead off Nugget-mania.
The Knickerboxers : Lies
Wow, I love this song. I remember hearing this one on the oldies FM child when I was a teenager and always wishing it was the Beatles. Alas, it wasn't; instead, it was Bergenfield, New Jersey band the Knickerbockers. This song rocks. And yeah, you might think it is Liverpool too, but alas, it's Jersey...
Mouse and the Traps : A Public Execution
Hey, not everything is English or acid rock in this great album. This track by Tyler, Texas garage band Mouse and the Traps is steeped in Dylan. I mean, tons of Dylan. There is a key change in the middle of it, too, which makes me think they were a bit into the Beatles Rubber Soul, too. Sadly, no "live" performance on Youtube for us to revel in!
That's it for this week's #TTT. The three shares were actually only from side one. Next week I'll dig up three more artifacts from side two...but, by all means, cheat and check out the entire album. You won't be sorry!
