Today's adventure out into the Driftless was a journey across the Mississippi and back into the state of Iowa. The location was the Fish Farm Mounds State Preserve; located about 40 minutes away from where I live, the site is described as a"prehistoric cemetery" containing some 30 conical Native American burial mounds. It was quite a visit, to be honest.
There is a small parking lot off of the state highway. Once you park your vehicle, you ascend these steps:
And you find yourself immersed in some type of peaceful, serene, and quiet environment. I kid you not.
Feeling adventurous, I decided to ascend the nearby bluff in hopes of getting a grand vista of the Mississippi Valley from afar:
Yet the views were mostly obscured by wild trees.
It is definitely a mystical place; despite the traffic just 40 feet away, it did feel like I was almost in another world. It's no wonder these ancient people chose this spot to bury their beloved.
I'll be coming back to this place, I think, many more times to take photos as the seasons' progress. It's also a "dark sky" spot; I may venture out to partake in the peace here to photograph and view the heavens in the coming weeks. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and checking these photos out. More Driftless images on the way next week; thanks again.
