A Sublime Sunday at the Old Post Office

For this week's #sublimesunday, as inspired by @c0ff33a, I stopped by the local Post Office to take some photos of old artwork on its premise. I've passed by this wall of art many times; today, I finally got out of the car and walked up to the get some photographs.

From a little research I've done in the past, the "murals" are terra-cotta panels. They are a true historic mystery; no one seems to know who created them or when they were added to the old post office's decor. There are only four remaining, but each is interesting in its own style.

As one local newspaper article from 1979 mentioned, the symbolism encoded in the artwork is lost on our culture. The reporter mentions how 1979 is far removed from the 19th century. Well, I dare say the culture of 2022 has no better understanding of the symbols above, and likely even moreso removed from the symbols that mattered in the 10th century.

Still, they are cool to look at. And with the old Post Office long gone to history, as was its Romanesque Revival style architecture, the art remains. Like many other historic buildings in this city, the old has been replaced by 1970's boring-esque architecture. It is sad, but at least the panels were saved. Fortunately for all of us, some unsung heroesf are always considerate of saving the past for the future.
