Now well into fall is the time that nuts are falling or have already fallen from the trees. If you haven't already collected the nuts you want, better get to it!
For the nut trees that you want to grow from seed it is a good time to use the upcoming winter season to stratify the nuts that you collect or purchase.
I recently reached out to a friend that many years ago inherited some amazing nut trees on his property. I asked him if he would sell and ship me some of his Kentucky giant walnuts.
Look at the size of those walnuts!!! They make my hand look like a child's hand :P
he has other walnuts in his grove so these walnuts will produce hybrids but I think some of the offspring will produce the large nut and I am willing to wait and see! in any case his other walnuts are delicious and amazing too.
I put my walnuts in some pots halfway filled with potting soil, along with some American chestnuts and red leaf filberts. I made sure to label each individually and the covered the nuts 2-3x their height in soil.
now they can wait until spring, ride out winter and receive the cold stratification that they need :) if I feel that there will be rodent pressure I can protect my nuts with hardware cloth.
it seems like it was just yesterday I was potting up tree seeds/nuts in the spring.
the spring nursery is just going to sleep now.. many of this year's nut trees have lost their leaves.
