What happened is, we became desolate
living among the things,
so we gave the clock a face,
the seat a back,
the table four hefty legs
which will never endure exhaustion.
We fitted our shoes with tongues
as smooth as our own
what's more, hung tongues inside chimes
so we could tune in
to their enthusiastic dialect,
what's more, since we cherished agile profiles
the pitcher got a lip,
the jug a long, slim neck.
Indeed, even what was past us
was recast in our picture;
we gave the nation a heart,
the tempest an eye,
the surrender a mouth
so we could go into security.
