Una hermana no tan especial

imagen.png

A not so special sister

imagen.png

Very few times I talk about that part of me as it is having been the sister of a special child and although I studied psychology to teach him, he passed away before graduating. But I learned many things and above all the love and sacrifice that families make to care for a special member.

Yesterday I was watching a movie (Wonder) Extraordinary in Spanish, where the protagonist was born with a genetic disease that caused a facial deformity that required many operations to be able to breathe, eat and even so he had a different face.

A very creative and loving family, especially his mother who educated him at home, the young man was very intelligent, but when he approaches the fifth grade of study, his parents decide to enroll him in a private school, they consider that it is time to go outside. outside world without the helmet he wore.

The boy has an older sister who feels a lot of love for her little brother and has been relegated due to family circumstances to the background. She knows perfectly well that her brother needs that help more than she does.

That is the feeling that made me remember my own experience with a special little brother. That knowing that my little brother needed me and needed to be the center of attention and care for the whole family, because it required more of us.

But what causes that in the family nucleus and especially in the other siblings. It forces them to mature more quickly. To be independent in their school work, to find solutions to everything and not to create problems.

imagen.png

It also causes you to shut up and lock up your doubts due to the impossibility of communicating with your elders.

Siblings become responsible for another human being from a tender age and even without knowing what that means, they simply become an important part of the family dynamic of caring, feeding, dressing, giving medicine simply out of love.

imagen.png

Forgetting a bit about living our lives as a child, playing and many times not asking for things that they can't give you to attend to the special little brother. This is how we mature much earlier than other children, because we learn to try and work harder to be the best and not cause trouble.

But of course not all siblings of special children react the same, some just can't bear that burden. That feeling of involuntary abandonment that your parents give you due to circumstances and the attention that a special member of the family requires.

imagen.png

Having a brother with special needs influences the entire family dynamic, you become attentive to the needs of others. We will always be and grow up with the stigma of being the siblings of a special child, we also experience sensations and feelings that may be difficult for other people to understand, especially children of the same age.

The most difficult stage to overcome with a special brother is of course adolescence. There may be jealousy over the amount of time and attention the special sibling receives from the parents. In some cases the shame for the behavior of the special brother in front of his friends and classmates. Resentment for having to spend time taking care of his brother instead of doing normal things with his friends.

It is very difficult for a parent to value one child over another. There are things that I can contribute from my experience as a sister of a special child. Like involving the whole family in decisions that affect the sibling with special needs, learning about the disease, dedicating family time to recreation.
