The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a plant native to South America. Is a fruit citrus fruit very appreciated for its exquisite flavor and delicate aroma, it has a high water content and a low caloric value. It is rich in fiber and vitamins, mainly in vitamin C, and in small amounts in vitamin A, B1, B6 and folic acid. In terms of mineral content, is potassium and to a lesser extent magnesium, zinc, iodine, iron and manganese stand out. In the kitchen it is used for the preparation of smoothies, jams, cakes, cocktails, salads, yogurt, ice cream, etc.

There are about six varieties that are commonly grown and that vary in size, shape, color and sweetness. The countries with the most pineapple production are: Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, India, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Nigeria, Colombia, Vietnam, Angola, Ghana.

Pineapple cultivation.

  • Its cultivation can be done in any season of the year depending on soil moisture and harvest time.

  • This crop does not tolerate high temperatures or floods.

  • The temperature must be relatively (22 to 30 ° c approximately). The excess of heat harms the quality of the fruit affecting several metabolic processes important in its formation reducing its acidity.

  • This plant reproduces by means of the crown and the suckers.

  • It requires sandy soils that are light, well drained and preferably flat. The ideal pH being an average of 5.

  • The sowing is done in double rows, at a distance between plants of 40 to 55 cm and at a depth of approximately 15 cm.

  • Water every day, but we must avoid puddles.

  • Eliminate the weeds that grow around the plant.

  • Harvesting takes place 8 to 9 months after sowing, but there are areas where you have to wait at least 11 to 12 months.
